The Down St Mary, Children’s Halloween Party

Preparations for the Halloween Children’s Party. Oh my, how broomsticks have change.

In the week prior to Halloween the Down St Mary Witches Coven met to plan their most important event of the year, the Down St Mary, Children’s Halloween Party. Tessa Pluck and Denise Appleyard heated the caldrons and cast spells, as they flew around the village on their broomsticks selling tickets, making cakes and decorating the Village Hall, with pumpkins, skeletons, black cats, spider’s webs, frogs and bats, to dramatic effect.

On Saturday 31st October the Village Hall was full of very excited children for their Halloween Party, organised by the Village Hall Committee. Fancy Dress was very much in evidence, not only with the children, but parents alike. Proceedings started with games, led by the Keeper of the Keys to the Toy Cupboard, Jude Milton, followed by the Fancy Dress Competition. The competition was judged by Pat Solly, and the winner of the Junior Prize went to George Strawson and the Senior Prize was presented to Richard Hodgson.

At four thirty there was a loud knock on the hall door, and the Good Witch from the Old Barn, Belinda Petersen entered, and settled down in the story tellers Chesterfield chair, to read a Ghost Story, for the children. After all the excitement of the games, fancy dress and ghost stories the children all tucked into Trolls Fingers and Chips, followed by Spooky Slimy Jelly, lovingly prepared by the Village Hall Committees resident Humble Bubble Toil and Trouble, White Witches, Kath Mattski and Paula Wyatt. The party finished as the night’s darkness drew in, and the sight of the children and parents wandering their way home in Halloween Costume, broomsticks in hand, and chains dragging along the road, was very spooky, I just hope none of the Down St Mary residents had a nasty surprise.

The Village Hall Committee would like to thank everyone for their support in making the Children’s Halloween Party a huge success, which helped raise £134.05 towards the up keep of our Village Hall.

Remember the next Down St Mary Village Hall Event is the Joint, Women’s Institute and Village Hall Committee, Christmas Fayre, to be held on Saturday 5th December at 2pm. Keep your eyes open for Posters and Flyers.
