Down St. Mary
Easter at St. Mary’s. Our Easter preparations commenced with our Mid-week Lent Evening Prayer Services. This series of Lay led services during Lent gave us the opportunity to reflect on the traumatic events and celebrations to come. Thank you to Lorraine, Fred and Lindsey for preparing and leading these services. On Maundy Thursday at 9.00 pm, following the Mission Community Service commemorating the Last Supper at Lapford, we held a short service at our Church which involved the Stripping of the Altar. This led into our Vigil until mid-night where we ‘kept watch’ with our Lord. On Easter Sunday Rev. Lindsey Starrs celebrated the risen Christ with a large congregation. The Church was again beautifully decorated with floral displays giving a true celebratory atmosphere after the austerity of Lent. The displays contained 30 Lilies which were donated by members of the community in memory of loved ones. Following the service fellowship continued with a glass of sherry or juice and a slice of Fred’s superb Simnel cake which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. I hope that you had an opportunity to visit the Church to view the decorations. Thank you to the ladies of our flower team who again made such fantastic displays.
Annual General Meeting. On Thursday 31st March our Church held its Annual Meeting of Parishioners where Nigel Fidock was elected as Churchwarden for the coming year. Following this there was the Church’s AGM. It was reported that there are 19 persons on our Church Electoral Roll. Rev. Lindsey Starrs thanked everyone who is involved in the upkeep and running of our beautiful Church. From the volunteers who cut the grass, those who clean the Church and decorate it for Festivals and throughout the year to those who ensure that it is open for people to visit. During 2015 there were three weddings, two funerals and one baptism. Financial reports were received, a copy of which is displayed on the notice board inside the Church. Our Christmas celebrations with the Carol Service, the ever popular Crib Service and Midnight Mass were well attended and a great success; as was our Harvest Festival, Supper and quiz at the Devonshire Dumpling at the end of September. It is the intention of the PCC to maintain regular services of worship at your Church.
Mission Community Service. At 10.30am on Sunday 29th May (a 5th Sunday) our Church will host a Mission Community Eucharist Service. There are no other services within the MC, you will be most welcome. Following the service fellowship will continue with some light refreshments.
